One child killed, 22 hospitalized after Georgia school bus accident

The Georgia State Patrol says the bus then struck a tree.
HINESVILLE - (UPDATE 1 p.m.) A Georgia state trooper says video shows a school bus driver struggling with the gear shift right before the bus crashed into a tree, killing a 5-year-old girl and injuring other children. He said his understanding was that the injured children had "bumps and scrapes and lacerations". After she was extricated from the bus, she was transported to Memorial Hospital in Savannah.
WTOC reports that one child, a 5-year-old girl, was killed in the accident.
The impact trapped the driver in the crushed front section of the bus.
This morning a Liberty County school bus was involved in a single vehicle accident, which resulted in one student fatality.
Multiple agencies from different counties responded. Our thoughts and prayers are with the student's family in their time of grief.
Grief counselors are on hand for students and staff, the district reported. The bus accident is now under investigation by the Georgia State Patrol.
That's about 50 miles (80 kilometers) southwest of Savannah.
The child killed in the accident was a student in the Liberty County School System, according to the district.
