An unlocked SIM-free iPhone is attractive for travelers who might want to use their iPhone overseas with a local SIM card. You can, however, pick one up in Apple's retail stores today. This version gives the freedom of activating the phone at any local or global carrier by simply getting a SIM card from your desired operator.

The threat of backorders and shipping delays have dogged the iPhone X since before the phone even launched.

Reports of the iPhone X running in short supply raised questions on when an unlocked iPhone X might be made available, especially among users who didn't want to be tied to a specific telco with a standard, two-year contract.

The iPhone includes all of the accessories you need to get started, including the EarPods with a Lightning connector, a USB-to-Lightning cable, the wall adapter, plus a Lightning to 3.5mm adapter for using regular earbuds or headphones with the handset.

Therefore, if you're an AT&T or T-Mobile customer interested in Apple's latest and greatest smartphone, we suggest you consider buying an unlocked unit, then adding it to your network of choice later, if you can afford it.

Apple is now selling the iPhone X SIM-free and unlocked in the United States.
