Ballet Institute of Atlanta to host 'The Nutcracker'

The show features more than 1,000 props and costumes, some as old as the show itself, including the original Nutcracker doll from the inaugural performance in 1985. In Asheville, the "Dance with Us" cast will perform their roles in the traditional performance, known to many around the world.

New Jersey Ballet's seasonal presentation of the holiday classic Nutcracker comes to Mayo Performing Arts Center for 14 performances beginning Friday, Dec. 8, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $29-69.

Joleen Zoller, President, BH Dance Theatre, says "We are an organization that brings opportunity for dancers in the area to have professional experience whether it be learning from a professional choreographer or bringing in dance companies where they would never see them unless they went to NY or Chicago and bigger cities".

"I couldn't make numerous rehearsals this year, so I showed up and Tracy (Bennett) said she wasn't anxious because I've done it so much", said Myers, who plays Grandfather Drosselmeyer in the Siouxland Civic Dance Association's production of "The Nutcracker Ballet".

Kenna is the first woman to choreograph the Black Hills production and these students like her style. Together they travel through an enchanted forest where the Snow Queen (Tricia Hiers) and her snowflakes dance.

Matsui first saw "The Nutcracker" in Japan when a Russian company brought it to her hometown. Dancing the role of Clara is Renee Cherry, a 5th grader at Farmingville Elementary. She is the lead in the Chinese dancers.

For many fans of ballet, The Nutcracker is the first experience with the art.

As for the Nutcracker, it's the variety within the ballet that she likes.

"It does kind of change a little bit, I've noticed that some of the things, Tracy gets a little bit creative with her directing and her choreography", he said.

As they put the finishing touches on their dances, these kids continue to learn and grow, both in their dance ability and their sense of accomplishment. Many children get to see the show through their schools, and it's a welcome performance for dancers Company Artist Kelsey Schwenker explained.

"It's really a magical for performers and audiences", Sheridan said.

In two days it's up on the big Civic Center stage as these hard working dancers present the Nutcracker 2017. "It was a great challenge to have to be that present throughout the entire show", Balsamo said of playing Maria.
