'Pokemon Go' challenges players to catch three billion Pokemon in a week

Pokemon GO Travel and Global Catch Event Offers Farfetch'd for 3 Billion Catches in a Week Travel and Global Catch Challenge Announced by Pokémon Go with a Huge Target

Niantic launched a huge "Pokemon Go" event that aims to draw its players back by tasking them to go around the world to capture billions of Pokemon. Everyone will be granted double XP and six hours of incense to lure more Pokemon to their location. Rewards are unlocked in three tiers, increasing the more Pokemon are caught.

What's more, with every new tier unlocked, the number of Pokemon appearing globally increases.

It took around a day and a half for Trainers to reach 500 million catches, so perhaps Thanksgiving will be when the next milestone is reached.

Remember Pokemon Go, the AI game that captured everyone's attention last summer?

At 1.5 billion catches, you get everything in the Bronze tier, along with double stardust. Starting today and running through November 26, you need to get out there and catch 'em all, or as many as you can.

The third challenge is to catch 3 billion Pokemon. Once unlocked, rewards will last until 1pm PT on December 1st. The Gold tier unlocks at 3 billion Pokemon caught, and if players reach that tier, Farfetch'd will unlock worldwide for 48 hours. Players first noted that Pokemon Go didn't include Legendary and EX Raids in their count months ago, and Pokemon Go finally acknowledged it was a "known issue" earlier in the fall.

This new Pokemon Go event has now started and and concludes with a special celebration at the Pokemon GO Safari Zone event in Tottori, Japan, on November 26.

Since Niantic specifically addressed the issue online, we're guessing that this bug will be corrected in the next update, which will probably be released after Pokemon Go's current event ends.
