A top Indonesian politician embroiled in a scandal involving an epic theft of public money has been hospitalized after a vehicle crash that is being widely mocked online as another tactic to avoid arrest. He was accompanied by his wife and his lawyer Fredrich Yunadi.

Novanto has denied wrongdoing but has repeatedly missed summonses for questioning by the agency in recent months, saying he was ill and needed heart surgery.

On Thursday night, Novanto was reported to have been in a vehicle crash, and was taken to a Jakarta hospital under armed guard for evaluation of injuries.

Indonesia's anti-graft agency KPK has put House Speaker Setya Novanto under detention as a suspect for allegedly being involved in the electronic identification card procurement corruption case.

The Corruption Eradication Commission had said it would declare Novanto a most-wanted fugitive within 24 hours after he avoided arrest during a Wednesday night raid by commission officials and paramilitary police on his Jakarta home.

Novanto was taken to a second hospital on Friday for a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan, media reported. Trump asked Novanto at Trump Tower. Yunadi also claimed to file a pretrial motion. "Sit back and grab your popcorn, this ain't over yet", human rights lawyer Veronica Koman tweeted on the unfolding drama.

Vice President Jusuf Kalla, who is also a Golkar member, told reporters on Thursday Novanto should be ready to face any legal process if called upon.

In 2015, he appeared at a news conference at Donald Trump's Manhattan skyscraper, where the now-US president described him as an "amazing man" who would do "great things for the United States".

Pictures from Sunday night show Novanto being wheeled in an orange detainee vest into the detention facility.

The scandal, which came to light earlier this year, caused widespread shock even by the standards of one of the world's most corrupt countries.

After Trump came to power, Joko Widodo tasked Novanto with establishing a rapport with the new US administration.
