United are understood to be unwilling to sell the midfielder in January so he faces the choice of running down his contact and leaving Old Trafford in the summer, or signing a new deal and remaining.

There is already big interest in him from Besiktas in Turkey. It's worth noting that various newspapers have linked United pair Matteo Darmian and Marouane Fellaini to Valencia in recent weeks.

United are keen for the Belgium worldwide to stay but negotiations, which began last season, have dragged on after he rejected an offer in September.

There will not have been a huge increase in his wages given that the player turns 30 next week.

According to the same story, Mourinho has identified Ozil as his top priority to improve his options in midfield following Manchester United's recent struggles. The Belgian-born Brazilian is on loan at the Mestalla this season and has made nine appearances thus far.
