Oliver acknowledged the bleakness of that pronouncement then listed a few bright spots to keep people going, "because the Trump presidency is basically a marathon: it's painful, it's pointless, and the majority of you didn't even agree to run it". Oliver cited Trump's antagonistic tweets toward North Korea's Kim Jong Un as an example of trolling behavior.

Oliver wrapped up his segment by asserting that, while contemplating these three unsafe tactics is very bleak, people should take hope in the victories this year that have stemmed from resistance and holding officials accountable, such as courts blocking Trump's Muslim ban and the inability of Congressional Republicans to repeal and replace Obamacare.

While the a year ago has seemed long, according to Oliver, "The Trump presidency is basically a marathon-painful, pointless, and the majority of you didn't agree to run, but were signed up by your dumbest friend".

The first ad tweaks Trump over comments he made about a new "clean coal" facility at an August rally, to which John Oliver previously called attention at the top of the show.

John Oliver's "Catheter Cowboy" is back. "They're going to clean it", and Oliver mocked him for thinking he meant that literally. Hanks said, as dramatic music played in the background while he awaited the answer from a mysterious figure. After the wax statue of Harding reveals itself, Hanks suggests that it "isn't a one-man job".

Tell us what you think! "We need all of you", Hanks said as other wax presidents appear, including Jimmy Carter, Richard Nixon, Bill Clinton and William Henry Harrison. As the five figures line up, Hanks adds, "Gentleman, let's go wax these b**tards".
