Traffic cop suspended for towing away vehicle with woman, baby inside

Mumbai: A video is going viral on social media in which the Mumbai Traffic Police could be seen towing away a vehicle with a lady inside it breastfeeding her baby. The man in question is believed to be a traffic policeman named Shashank Rane, who was not wearing his name badge while on duty, in violation of the rules of the Maharashtra Police.The incident took place on SV Road in Malad and the video of the same was uploaded on social media platform, Facebook, on November 10.The video has created an outrage on social media. After seeing the video, Joint Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar said the cop, identified as Shashank Rane, was suspended pending an investigation. Hence, pending inquiry, the constable has been placed under suspension. "The case will be handled appropriately and sternly after the report is received tomorrow (Sunday)", Kumar assured in a statement on Saturday evening.

Earlier, the cop even grinned and confirmed his name and the woman was also requested to alight from the vehicle before it was towed away, but she refused as she was nursing her child and was unwell herself.

The video shows a passerby was repeatedly asking the cop to stop the vehicle but the latter pretended to not have heard.

The lady had told the traffic constable that since she had to feed her 7-month-baby that is why the vehicle was parked along the road.

The policeman reportedly also claimed to have a video to counter the other side's version.

The incident that took place on Saturday, when the two traffic cops towed away the auto of a woman in Mumbai's Malad area.

The woman said that two other vehicles parked there were not picked and her auto was chosen for towing without listening to her desperate pleas.

Rakhi Mali, the woman, told mediapersons on Saturday that she was in the auto before the towing vehicle was attached to it. Sanjay Jadhav, deputy commissioner of police (west traffic), said he has asked for a report from Malad traffic division.
