A fake version of the WhatsApp messenger app was discovered on Google Play Store and over a million Android users has been duped into downloading a fake application on Google Play, thanks to a character space. The app was being tested as a pilot app on some Android devices a while back as part of the Early Access Program.

Even when the listing was live, not everyone was able to download Google Files Go, and people saw a message that said that the app is part of an early access program that is now full. As such, Files Go helps users get the most out of their phone's storage.

As you dive into the various sections, you can then filter the files by source for easier discovery, access, or deletion. Similar to popular file sharing apps such as Shareit and Xender, Google's app creates your profile to help you send large-sized files with your nearby contacts at a fast pace.

Google has a history of working on apps and services for more rural, data-lacking locations around the globe, like its mobile wallet for users in India and a search-lite app for Indonesian folks. "We have nothing specific to announce at this time".

It is far from the first time that Google has had to clean up fake malicious apps on the Play Store.

One feature which stock Android has always lacked is proper, fleshed-out file manager. There are also other suggestions, including clearing app caches, deleting apps that aren't frequently used, and removing "spam & duplicate images". It will tell you Documents, Videos, Images, Downloads, and Received Files.

The APK file of the Files Go app is around 5.41MB in size, lower than the size of the Shareit and Xender installation packages. With Wi-Fi and Bluetooth toggled on two devices, files can be transferred effortlessly.

The Files Go app will also list every app on your Android device that you are not using.

Essentially, Google has made a decision to capitalize on the interest in the new app, thanks to its exposure through media coverage.

We do not know yet if the page will remain open, or Netflix will close it once again. You can download the APK right now if you do not want to wait for the official release. Mashable has reached out to Google for more details on the app and will update this story if we receive a reply.
