According to the New York Times, Paul Manafort, the former Trump campaign chairman, and Rick Gates, an ex-business associate of Manafort's, were ordered to surrender to federal authorities. CNN also reported a Manafort indictment will be unsealed Monday. Manafort emerged as a key figure in Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation for his 2014 consulting work done on behalf of the Ukrainian government.

It was authorized under secret court orders, and it continued until early this year, after president Donald Trump was in the White House.

Emboldened by a Washington Post report showing that the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton paid for the research for a hotly disputed dossier seeking to connect the president to Russia, Trump has insisted "there was NO collusion between Russia and Trump".

The Washington Post reported that Federal Bureau of Investigation "agents departed the Manafort residence with a trove of material, including binders prepared ahead of Manafort's congressional testimony". The FBI raided his home over the summer.

"I've always found Paul Manafort to be a very decent man", the president said at the time.

Mueller, former director of the FBI, was appointed special council in May to lead the independent investigation into possible connections between Trump campaign associates and Russian officials.

"Led by some very bad and conflicted people", Trump tweeted in June, the Russian Federation probe is "the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history". Check back for updates and follow BuzzFeed News on Twitter.
