Shakespeare, who guided the Foxes away from a relegation battle in impressive fashion last season, was sacked on Tuesday after just one win from the opening eight Premier League games of 2017-18.

The 53-year-old was popular with the players and part of Ranieri's staff during Leicester's surprise title win two seasons ago, but paid the price for a poor start that has left the team third-bottom of the table.

"Sometimes you just need a bounce of the ball to get that first goal and that's something that we're going to try and address", Appleton said during his press conference on Thursday.

Assistant manager Michael Appleton has been placed in temporary charge. Memories which I have shared with the club's outstanding fans.

"He has been here a long time and obviously he has done a lot of roles".

Former Leicester captain Steve Walsh says Craig Shakespeare's sacking seems harsh and believes expectations are high at the club.

After thanking Shakespeare for his contribution to the club, vice-chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha conceded that the board felt something had to be done. Leicester spent an estimated £74million on new players, but Harry Maguire is the only new arrival to have made a significant impression to date.

In a statement to the League Managers Association, Shakespeare said: "I would like to thank the owners and board of Leicester City for giving me the opportunity to manage this fantastic club".

Dyche is beginning to build his stock as an excellent Premier League manager and it is not the first time he has been linked with another position.

But when asked if he is keen to jump back into management by replacing Shakespeare, Appleton declined to put his name forward, insisting his sole focus is preparing for Saturday's trip to Swansea.

"Hopefully with a little bit of luck and a little bit of quality we can win the game". I'm never been aware of any approach.
