SEVERAL people have been shot after a gunman opened fire in multiple locations in a Swedish town.

An unspecified number of people have been apprehended for questioning, the police said, and a special division responsible for dealing with serious crime is now investigating.

A major police operation is underway. The area is known to have incidents of gang violence, according to social media users.

"When we get there we found several people who were injured in a few different places". We saw someone running outside.

"I was at home at the computer when I heard a loud bang", Aron Tydén - another person in the area - told the publication, claiming that he heard people running. It's packed with police cars in the street'.

At least four people have been taken to hospital and several others have been injured in the attack.

Trelleborg is a Swedish port town located 33 kilometres south of Malmo and 64km southeast of Copenhagen, Denmark.

Another neighbour told the newspaper: 'There were many shots.

Security officials have blocked some areas and are conducting "an investigation".
