Rafael Nadal will play Marin Cilic in the semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters on Saturday after the world number one was forced to fight past Grigor Dimitrov 6-4, 6-7 (4/7), 6-3.

Nadal powered his way into 4th Shanghai semi-final in game 9 after another commanding hold and he will play against Marin Cilic tomorrow for the place in the final.

Nadal required just one break of serve to claim the opening set, but Dimitrov showed resistance throughout the contest and deserved to take the left-hander to a tie-break in the second.

Marin Cilic, the fourth seed, was a 7-6 (7-1) 6-4 victor against Steve Johnson, while Grigor Dimitrov got past Sam Querrey to set up an encounter with Nadal.

Second seed Roger Federer and Juan Martin del Potro will be the favourites for their respective quarter-finals later on Friday as they prepare to face Richard Gasquet and Viktor Troicki in the last eight, respectively.

Nadal served out the set and had a chance to gain the upper hand in the second, but Dimitrov saved a break point before taking a 3-2 lead and the pumped-up sixth seed clenched his fist upon winning his next service game.

The Croatian fourth seed Cilic beat the unseeded Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-3, 6-4 for a date with Nadal.

The tournament's fourth seed did see his ideal serving record broken by Ramos-Vinolas, who broke Cilic for the first time in this year's Shanghai Masters during the second set, although it only delayed his advance into the final four. I'm happy I was able to do better today on the break points.
