The program for girls older than Cub Scouts projected to begin in 2019 will allow them to earn the Eagle Scout rank, the highest achievement in the organization.
The change was unanimously approved by Boy Scout board of directors in a meeting at BSA headquarters in Texas.
One member of the Girl Scouts national board called the move "a bad idea" and said the boys' organization was suffering from financial problems and dropping membership attributed to sexual abuse scandals and gender identity and deficient programming.
"The values of Scouting - trustworthy, loyal, helpful, kind, courageous and reverent, for example - are important for both young men and women", Surbaugh added.
The BSA said its decision comes after years of requests from girls to join.
"There will be dens of boys and dens of girls that will come together to form the Cub Scout pack", he said.
Richland Scoutmaster Eric Lindrose welcomes the Boy Scouts of America decision to allow girls to join its programs.
But Soto-Harmon believes there is a misconception about what is available in the Girl Scouts. Earlier this year, the church announced that it would stop participating in two Boy Scouts programs for teenagers. The kids in her group are 18- to 21-year-olds. "It's not gender specific", Hulet said.
The decision to integrate girls into Boy Scouts' programs has been met locally with an unenthusiastic response. The larger Cub Scout packs will have the option to remain single gender or welcome both genders. This method is especially effective in at-risk communities; studies have shown that girls who experience our fully immersed single-gender Girl Scout programming demonstrate higher levels of self-confidence and academic success than girls who have not had benefit of our gender-specific and girl-led program opportunities. In the interest of maintaining safe spaces for girls, boys will still not be welcome, Lopes and other GSUSA members said. "Girl Scouts is the best girl leadership experience in the world, period", she said.
Many scouting organizations in other countries already allow both genders and use gender-free names such as Scouts Canada. We have canoes and kayaks at our camps. We are really strict about that and it has prevented any issues. It would also not change its plans to drop its involvement in Varsity and Venturing programs for young men ages 14 to 18.
"All of our issues have weakened us to the point where the Boy Scouts now see opportunities", she said.
"Nationally, it is predicted this has the potential to double the size of the Boy Scouts of America", Farrer said. "I think it's silly". "We might see a couple hundred but not thousands". "The Boy Scouts' house is on fire", the organization wrote in a statement, according to ABC News.
In August, the president of the Girl Scouts accused the Boy Scouts of seeking to covertly recruit girls into their programs while disparaging the Girl Scouts' operations.
Only time will tell how the impact of allowing girls into a known boys club will effect this historic organization. Girl Scouts of Greater Mississippi will stand true to our mission to build girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place and to the convictions we share through our traditions. It is now 102 years old. But the solution to that imbalance shouldn't be telling girls to abandon their Girl Scout troops to go after the boys' honor. The Girl Scouts have turned away from the outdoor adventures that my daughter wanted.
Are you or have you ever been a part of a single-sex club, team, organization or school?
Hulet continued, "I'm just over-the-moon excited for this change".
