At 10am BST the NOAA's National Hurricane Center located the storm about 725 southwest of the Azores.

The hurricane season has seen a series of strong, destructive storms that have wreaked havoc across the Caribbean as well as in the USA states of Texas and Florida.

Burkhill said cold sea temperatures mean Ophelia will not be strong enough to be categorised as a hurricane when it hits Britain.

The US National Hurricane Centre has warned it could strengthen over the next day or so.

The Category 1 storm now poses no threat to land, forecasters said, and no watches or warnings have been issued.

However, Ophelia will have weakened into a post-tropical cyclone by the time it reaches the UK. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles.

Hurricane Ophelia is expected to move towards Europe in the days ahead, Silverang said.

Ophelia is on track to reach the United Kingdom nearly 30 years to the day of the Great Storm of 1987, which killed 22 people across Britain, France and the Channel Islands.

For the last time, so many storms had become hurricanes in 1893.
