Last week in Beijing, Bedene lost the first 10 games against Roberto Bautista Agut before calling it quits.

In the quarterfinals, Nadal will play sixth-seeded Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria, who got past Sam Querrey of the US 6-3, 7-6 (3).

"I think he played a great match, maybe one of the best of the season", Zverev said.

A mouthwatering Nadal-Federer final on Sunday awaits if the celebrated pair continues at the current rate.

Del Potro will John Isner of the US or Viktor Troicki of Serbia in the last eight on Friday.

However, there is a determined look in the eye of the 29-year-old and a first title of the year would send him soaring up to 12th.

Zverev's fury at letting the match slip became apparent in the third as he massacred his racquet as the Argentine broke for a 3-2 lead in the decider.

"Right now I'm very pissed off, as you can probably tell", said Zverev afterwards, having smashed the racquet on the court, then trodden on it, and brutalized it further as he stomped back to his chair.

German youngster Zverev is one of the rising stars on the tennis circuit after storming up the world rankings to number four at the age of 20.

"Of course it's good news, and especially in this part of the season", Nadal said.

"I saw his frustration, for sure".

"Remember when Roger (Federer) was young?"

Fourth seed Marin Cilic of Croatia and Spain's Albert Ramos-Vinolas go head to head in the other quarterfinal.
