Remigio joined the department in March 1988.

Police said a 2013 Mercedes C300 driven by Michael Ricci, 18, of Burlington, was racing other vehicles on the northbound side when the auto crossed over to the southbound side and collided head-on with Remigio's Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

Somerville police officer Louis Remigio, 55, was riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle on I-95 southbound in North Hampton when police say 18-year-old Michael Ricci crossed the median and hit him.

"If you want an officer responding to you when you're in need, you want it to be Officer Remigio", Fallon said. "Louie was a very important part of this department, and I can not begin to express what his loss will mean not only to each of us in the Somerville Police Department, but to the Somerville community".

Friends of Ail and Danielle Remigio have started a fundraiser to help the two women after their father, Somerville Police Officer Louis Remigio, died from the injuries he sustained in a Sunday crash in New Hampshire.

He added "my heart and my prayers are with his family during this time of unimaginable loss".

"Officer Remigio was not only one of the most dedicated officers, but he was a well-respected and well-loved member of our city", said Mayor Joseph Curtatone.

"Officer Louis Remigio goes above and beyond the call of duty, not only while on-duty, but while off-duty as well", the department wrote in a 2015 post lauding Remigio's work on traffic issues, drug investigations, and crash investigations.

Remigio was off-duty when he was riding his motorcycle on Interstate 95 in New Hampshire. Police said Ricci, who was scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday, could face additional charges.

Witnesses at the scene told state police that Ricci was racing with other vehicles on the road. The driver and a passenger were injured but are expected to survive.

Ricci was arrested on reckless conduct charges and will be arraigned in a New Hampshire Court on October 20.
