Mundo Deportivo have reported that following his failed transfer to Barcelona, Coutinho was so dejected that he declared to his club that he would never put on a red shirt again.

Coutinho has risen to the fore on Merseyside in recent years, and attracted serious interest from Spanish giants Barcelona over the summer.

Widespread reports have claimed that the highest offer was in excess of £100m, but the Merseyside outfit stood firm and kept hold of the playmaker, who signed a new long-term contract in January.

Danny Gallagher of MailOnline cited a report from Catalan daily Mundo Deportivo, which said the Brazilian had a verbal agreement with his employers and agreed to stay on at Anfield "providing he could move on in January".

The Brazil worldwide was wanted to replace Neymar all summer but the Reds stayed strong and refused to sell their talisman.

Liverpool were reluctant to sell their star asset last summer, despite receiving a bid believed to be in the region of £120m, but are thought to be willing to sell next summer. It's now claimed an offer of £134million will tempt them to cash in.

In order to convince the Brazilian to play in Europe, Liverpool chiefs promised him they'd let him move to La Liga in the New Year. Liverpool now have two points from two games following draws with Sevilla and Spartak Moscow.

Coutinho would be cup-tied for Champions League games should he move to Barca but that is not expected to affect the move.

Neymar reportedly tells Paris Saint-Germain to sign Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho.

Ernesto Valverde's side take on Atletico Madrid this weekend in the Spanish top flight.
