The answer, according to a new Super Mario Odyssey trailer, would be a riff on very New York-y Broadway musicals, complete with a dancing troupe in grey suits and fedoras.

Mario has transformed into another dinosaur in the new trailer for Super Mario Odyssey.

You may recognize the singer featured in the video as Pauline, the woman that Mario saved from Donkey Kong all the way back in 1981. It's also revealed that, for the first time ever, there will be lyrical Mario music which includes the catchy theme song.

If Super Mario had a musical, what would it be like?

But also it's impossible to watch without falling into the existential question of what Mario is.

With Cappy at hand, Mario is given a new way of attacking enemies as well as a new way of going around by jumping on him, and a new special ability altogether: capturing. You'll need to download the track to a computer and then transfer it over, if you want to hear it on the go. Some elements we already know well, such as "Cappy", but there are others shown off which are exciting new information like fun mini-games and co-op. Making his platforming debut on the Nintendo Switch in splendid style, the mustachioed plumber is returning to the sandbox type worlds that were found in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine (and to a lesser extent Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2).
