What We Learned from the Broncos 42-17 Win Over the Cowboys

Dallas Cowboys defensive end Demarcus Lawrence forces Denver Broncos quarterback Trevor Siemian to fumble during the first half of an NFL football game Sunday Sept. 17 2017 in Denver. The Cowboys recovered the ball What We Learned from the Broncos 42-17 Win Over the Cowboys

As good as things felt after last week's victory against the New York Giants, it felt equally sickening sitting through the Mile High blowout at the hands of the Denver Broncos. You have to go to the offensive line and say, 'I know it's tough but let's keep battling, let's keep fighting.' You have to go to the quarterback and say, 'Hey man, I'm not getting it done today - you have to step it up.' You have to rally the troops. They need him to do that because a year ago, he led the league in rushing.

For Elliott, it's about a lack of effort in chasing down Broncos defenders on Prescott interceptions. That's two key elements of your run defense gone. In fact, next to no one on the Cowboys defense, or offense played up to their capability. Nonetheless, they need to play better if they want this season to go the way it's supposed to. They're going to have the safeties up, have the linebackers up.

"Oftentimes people when you win a game, they think everything is great". And Elliott, who led the National Football League in rushing as a rookie last season, gained only 8 yards - in nine carries - on Sunday. There were other times where Dez Bryant would essentially have to play defense and slap the ball away to prevent the defender from picking off another pass. The Cowboys started 2014 and 2016 with a 1-1 record and were also completely embarrassed in the 2014 season opener by the 49ers. That was the final stat line for Ezekiel Elliott, who had his worst game as a pro on Sunday. Everything up the middle would be stuffed.

Why can't the Broncos quarterback get any respect? Things looked bad on Sunday but give Jason Garrett the chance to rally his team and give them a chance to respond on national television to what was a really bad day in the office Sunday against the Denver Broncos.

Elliott had 15 straight games of at least 80 yards rushing and had never had fewer than 51 before he was held to 8 yards on nine carries against the ball-hawking Broncos, who made it their priority to stop Elliott and force the Cowboys to beat them with the passing of Prescott.

So Dallas' defense isn't all that, and their offense isn't either...

As good as the Giants secondary is, the Broncos are in a league of their own.

This team needed to be punched in the mouth to see how they react. Now we're just talking about optics instead of actual football. Just watch how he plays. Some will claim that the Broncos have laid out the blueprint in beating the Cowboys. "You've got to be better than us". Denver has the tools.

All week, we'll take you to Arlington to give you an inside look at the story lines and players surrounding the prime time showdown between the Cowboys and Cardinals. Going forward, that's what you're going to see.

So why is it, exactly, that it's so tough for us to believe in Trevor Siemian? The Cowboys have a handful of good defensive teams on the schedule this season.
