Bhubaneswar: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was on Tuesday allowed by the special CBI court here to take BJD MLA Pravat Biswal on a five-day remand.
The ruling BJD also dubbed the arrest "politically motivated". The BJD, it may be pointed out, has always claimed that it never shields anyone involved in any sort of corrupt practices.
"The innocent MLA was arrested only because of BJP's political vendetta against him. Now, it is targeting the BJD", party leader Subash Singh said.
He is the second BJD leader who has been arrested in connection with chit fund scam in Odisha since 2014.
The regional party, which had earlier suspended Banki MLA Pravat Tripathy and Mayurbhanj MP Ramchandra Hansdah after their arrest by the CBI for alleged links with chit fund companies, has made a decision to wait and watch what the CBI has up its sleeves against Biswal before taking any action. The revenue and disaster management minister asked, "Biswal and his wife have been interrogated by the CBI several times". "Our party is in favour of an impartial probe into the scam but it appears that the Centre is misusing the CBI and agencies like the Enforcement Directorate, but the BJD will fight it out politically", he said. "This is not digestible", alleged Arta.Pravat's family and supporters have alleged that the entire conspiracy has been chalked out by BJP leader and union minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
"It appears that CBI is acting at the behest of PM Narendra Modi-led BJP government at the Centre".
They also took out a bike rally from Cuttack to Bhubaneswar shouting slogans against BJP and CBI and demonstrated in front of the CBI office in the state capital.
