One resident already was dead when police got a call at 4 a.m. In Daytona Beach, one person died and three other were hospitalized after ingesting poisonous fumes from a gas generator.

Around 115 residents of the retirement home in Hollywood, north of Miami, were immediately evacuated after a nearby hospital began receiving patients suffering from heat-related problems. "We have other patients in critical care", he said, though he didn't elaborate.

The nursing home said it was prepared for the hurricane, which slammed into Florida early Sunday morning. "Every facility that is charged with caring for patients must take every action and precaution to keep their patients safe - especially patients that are in poor health".

"We were helped after Katrina and we need to help our friends in Texas and Florida", Kennedy said.

The overall death toll from the storm climbed to 81 on Wednesday, with several hard-hit Caribbean islands accounting for more than half the fatalities, and officials continued to assess damage inflicted by the second major hurricane to strike the US mainland this year.

At least 56 of Florida's 639 nursing homes still have no electricity on Friday morning, five days after Hurricane Irma.

All assisted living facilities and nursing homes must obtain ample resources to sustain operations and comfortable temperatures for at least 96-hours following a power outage.

The nursing home deaths brought the total number of storm-related fatalities in Florida to 20 and illustrated the urgency of restoring electricity to millions of people across the southern state.

"What we've seen is something extremely tragic", Mr. Gould said. The nursing center lost power during the storm and had working generators, but a kitchen worker said those were being used to cook and not for air conditioning.

Trump praised first responders and local officials for their handling of the storm.

Broward County also saw significant damage. Sharief confirmed during a news conference that three residents died at the center and two died at the hospital. On Monday, when most customers were without power, the storm weakened to a tropical depression.

Relatives who have family members in the facility have started to gather outside the two-story gray building that is situated among a cluster of medical facilities and hospitals.

"Long term care at The Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills means taking the time to provide for all of a resident's special needs". "What do I know but I hope this man right here. runs for the Senate", he said.
