The film is about the so-called "War of Currents", an electrical arms race that played out in the late 1880s between inventor Thomas Edison who waged a corporate war against a rival electrical company run by George Westinghouse.

The Current War tells the story of the battle between George Westinghouse (played by Michael Shannon) and Thomas Edison (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) in the late 1800's which would determine whose electrical solution would power the modern world.

"The Current War" is a film worth noting.

The trailer begins with rows of light bulbs lighting up, with Cumberbatch in the middle of them.

Alfonso Gomez-Rejon also directs Katherine Waterston, Tom Holland, Tuppence Middleton, and Matthew Macfadyen.The Current War will screen at TIFF 2017 before opening in US theaters on January 19, 2018. The other, Westinghouse, had alternating current, a lot of money, and-eventually-Nikola Tesla. The third piece of this war is Nikola Tesla, played by Nicholas Hoult, who sticks to the shadows of this preview until the very end.

Alfonso Gomez-Rejon serves as director for The Current War, having experienced acclaim with his 2015 bittersweet comedy Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, along with television work with Ryan Murphy on American Horror Story and Glee. (Though, considering this movie is coming out November 24, right in the heart of Oscar season, its main fight will be for Academy Awards.) Check out the first trailer for The Current War above.

The Current War sparks its titular historical rivalry when it debuts on January 19, 2018.
