Nassau, New York police say 34-year-old Bobby Vanderhall beat his mother Lynn, 29-year-old sister Melissa, and Melissa's best friend, Janel Simpson to death with a hammer.

A friend of Melissa was able to escape and call for help. He allegedly used a hammer from the garage to break into the home, and then used the hammer to fatally bludgeon the three women.

A fourth woman survived the assault and is hospitalized. Lt. Richard LeBrun of Nassau County Police, who held a news conference at the homicide scene shortly after 10 a.m. Saturday.

Vanderhall, who police described as more than six feet tall and at least 230 pounds, was arrested within two miles of the house after police found him asleep in a auto.

The Post reported that her wrist was broken fending off the attack.

Fitzpatrick said Vanderhall had a history of "emotional issues" and had on two occasions been taken from his mother's home to a medical center.

According to police, Lynn Vanderhall had an order of protection against her mentally troubled son.

Bobby Vanderhall, who police described as more than 6 feet tall and at least 230 pounds, was arrested within 2 miles of the house, police said. "Beautiful, outstanding people, that's what I want the world to know", said a family relative, Juanita Johnson. He was asleep in his auto. He described his daughter and her friends as fun-loving women and said they were even planning to go to Cuba in the fall.

'These girls don't give problems, these girls just have fun, ' Simpson said.

Vanderhall was arraigned on Sunday, and is charged with three counts of second degree murder and one count of attempted murder.
