A woman was killed when Indian and Pakistani troops exchanged firing and shelling in Mendhar sector of the Poonch district early Saturday.

He said an army many identified as Naib Subedar Jagram Singh Tomar, 42, died was grievously injured in the Pakistani troops firing. He is survived by wife, son and a daughter.

Around 0520 hours, mortar shells fired from across the border exploded near the house of Mohd. "If they (Pak Army) fire one bullet, we (Indian Army) retaliate with 10 bullets", Singh said here. Thirteen schools in vulnerable areas would remain closed till further orders, officials said.

"The 45-year-old woman Raqia Begum was a resident of upper Golat in Mendhar", said Mendhar Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Riyaz Tantray. The incident took place in the district's Balakot sector.

According to reports cross border firing and shelling was going on when reports last came in.

A lady was killed when Pakistan damaged truce in Jammu and Kashmir's Mendhar part at 5:30 am on Saturday.

The death toll of soldiers in July was higher than the casualties suffered by security forces in Pakistani troops firing and shelling along the LoC in the State a year ago.
