She said that she had told Melania Trump about the procedure when the couple stopped by Mar-a-Lago on New Year's Eve.

Ms Brzezinski and Mr Scarborough responded to Mr Trump in an op-ed in the Washington Post on Friday titled "Donald Trump is not well". "I said no!" Ms Brzezinski said she was very concerned about what this reveals of Mr Trump.

But a source said Scarborough was the one begging, turning to Trump senior adviser Jared Kushner to ask about The Enquirer article, according to Fox News.

"The fake media is trying to silence us, but we will not let them", Trump said, without offering any evidence that journalists - who cover every public remark made by the President - have attempted to silence him.

Lindsey Graham saying Trump's tweet was "beneath the office and represents what is wrong with American politics".

They also claimed that the White House had tried unsuccessfully to get them to apologise to the president for unfavourable coverage in exchange for him getting a negative tabloid story about them killed. He also accused her of "bleeding badly from a face-lift" on a past occasion when he encountered her. "These calls persisted for quite some time, and then Joe had the conversations he said he had with the White House, where they said, 'Oh this could go away'".

Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough are sparring with Donald Trump at a rate never seen before!

Mika Brzezinski answers a question from Willie Geist on the set of "Morning Joe", as Joe Scarborough and Donny Deutsch look on.

The social media sniping with the Morning Joe anchors sparked bipartisan criticism, and Brzezinski fired back by posting a picture of a cereal ad about "little hands". Mr Trump tweeted during Friday morning's broadcast, "Watched low rated @Morning_Joe for first time in long time. YOU AREN'T PRESIDENTIAL", Josh Sanchez said.

Seth Meyers said Trump's tweets at Brzezinski actually rendered him speechless. The president, she added, "happens to disrespect's sad".

In the Post column, Brzezinski and Scarborough lambasted Trump as mentally unstable, saying he had an "unhealthy obsession" with their television program, and cited what they called his continued mistreatment of women.

And Dan Scavino Jr., an assistant to the president, tweeted from his personal account in defense of Trump. "Too bad!" he tweeted.
