While the league has given out the award for Most Valuable Player since the '50s, the National Basketball Association is branding this as something of a new beginning for the award. Seriously. Westbrook was surrounded by mediocrity, especially after the departure of Kevin Durant, but he kept the Thunder afloat and led them to a playoff berth while posting one of the most spectacular single season stat lines in the history of the sport.

Russell Westbrook #0 of the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Western Conference and James Harden #13 of the Houston Rockets and the Western Conference warm up before the NBA All-Star Game 2016 at the Air Canada Centre on February 14, 2016 in Toronto.

Westbrook's overwhelming statistical season combined with his clear importance to his team was the driving force in his MVP campaign.

The NBA formerly gave out its individual awards at various points throughout the postseason before switching to the awards show this season and presenting them all at once in front of the league's top players and stars from the entertainment world.

"Regardless of who wins the award, it feels like the lengthy delay in handing it out - coupled with the historic Finals performances of three non-finalists with MVP-like résumés - will take some of the shine off of it".

Leonard is the two-time reigning Defensive Player of the Year, and he's up for the honor again. "They weren't sure how many games we were going to win or how far we were going to go or whatever, but I think the group of guys, we never let that sink in our building". Fans were able to vote for smaller awards, such as the aforementioned Assist of the Year. While this will be his first, I have a sneaking suspicion that this won't be his last.

While implementing his speedball system in Houston, D'Antoni's squad won 55 games and created an MVP candidate in James Harden.

The NBA Awards will air at 9 p.m. ET on TNT.

Embiid had the strongest stats, averaging 20.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.45 blocks, but was limited to 31 games because of injuries. "This is a lot of people, a lot of hard work goes into it, and I'm the recipient of some pretty good players".

Monday night brings the first-ever awards show presentation for the National Basketball Association.

"This has been a special year", said Gordon, who added the Sixth Man of the Year award to his 3-point championship from All-Star weekend. Gordon averaged 16.2 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game last season. Bucks forward Giannis Antetoukounmpo was named the most improved player.
