"He remains in critical condition but has improved in the last 24 hours", the hospital said in a statement.

Texas Rep. Joe Barton, still in his baseball uniform, told reporters a shooter came out to the practice and opened fire, shooting at Rep. Trent Kelly, R-Miss., who plays third base.

Some of the almost 25,000 attendees Thursday night held "Scalise Strong" posters and signs reading "Geaux Scalise", borrowing the Louisiana State University tradition. Authorities are investigating the incident but have not identified a motive. Richmond, who plays for the Democratic team, said he had visited the hospital twice and planned to go again before Thursday night's game at Nationals Park. The congressman underwent another surgery Saturday, and the hospital said he was more responsive and speaking with family.

Because the bullet shattered, there may be hundreds of fragments in Scalise's body and doctors do not intend to try to remove them all, Sava said.

Hodgkinson 66, who was from the St. Louis suburb of Belleville, Illinois, died after being shot by police.

A source told the Associated Press on Saturday that investigators aren't sure of the significance of the names and don't know if it was a list of people he was targeting. The person did not disclose the names, but said those listed had been briefed.

Sava earlier said the Louisiana congressman had been at "imminent risk of death" when he was first brought into the hospital on Wednesday, and he received many units of transfused blood.

Sava declined to put a timeline on when that would happen or when Scalise, 51, would be able to leave the hospital. After Scalise was shot in the hip, the bullet traveled through his pelvis, fractured bones and injured internal organs.

Hospital officials said it is hard to predict how long the congressman will be in the hospital, but that he is expected to be able to walk and hopefully run after a period of rehabilitation.

The shooting occurred at a popular park and baseball complex in Alexandria, Virginia, across the Potomac River from Washington, where Republican lawmakers and others were gathered for a morning practice about 7 a.m.

Once recovered, Scalise will be able to walk and hopefully run, the doctor said.

The hospital says the Louisiana congressman "will require additional operations, and will be in the hospital for some time".

"They saved a lot of lives", the president said. "I think that his risk of death right now is substantially lower than when he came in. he was as critical as you can be when he came in". "US!" before lawmakers from both teams gathered to pray near second base, the field position where usual-shortstop Scalise was shot.

Also suffering relatively minor injuries were two Capitol Police officers, David Bailey and Crystal Griner, and House GOP aide Zack Barth. He will be in the hospital for some time.

Since then, the lawmaker has undergone multiple surgeries and procedures to stop the bleeding and fix bone.
