MedStar Washington Hospital Center Director of Trauma Dr. Jack Sava speaks during a news conference in Washington, Friday, June 16, 2017, about the condition of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of La. who was shot in Alexa.

Scalise, the number three House Republican, was shot along with three other people early Wednesday when a lone gunman, angry about President Donald Trump, attacked a group of Republican lawmakers as they practiced for a congressional charity baseball game.

The alleged shooter, identified by police as James Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Illinois, was killed in a shootout with police Wednesday morning after shooting Scalise and three others.

He has undergone several surgeries and has more ahead.

Doctors "fully expect him to walk", Sava said, "and hopefully run".

Scalise arrived at the hospital in a critical state, facing "an imminent risk of death", Sava said. "He underwent another surgery today, but continues to show signs of improvement".

James Hodgkinson, who is from downstate IL, had a list of three Republican congressmen in his pocket. Thursday night's annual Congressional Ball Game drew record crowds and, despite an 11-2 rout by Democrats over Republicans, the GOP team took home the trophy as lawmakers dedicated the game to Scalise.

Scalise, who remains in critical condition but has improved, was shot in the left hip and suffered damage to internal organs.

"So we all owe Steve a big, big thank you", Trump added. Hodgkinson died after being shot by police.

Two Capitol Police officers, David Bailey and Crystal Griner, and House Republican aide Zack Barth, were also injured in the shooting.

"We are especially appreciative of the strong outpouring of love and support from our neighbors, friends, from across Louisiana and across the country", Jennifer Scalise's statement said.

According to the doctors, the main concern for Scalise at this point is making sure he does not have an infection.

Bailey was spotted on Friday in the Capitol, on crutches and out of uniform, accepting congratulations from fellow officers.
