Sue Hodgkinson, the wife of anti-Republican congressional baseball practice shooter James Hodgkinson, opened up for the first time about her husband to local reporters in Belleville, Illinois, yesterday.

A government official says the suspect in the Virginia shooting that injured Rep. Steve Scalise and several others has been identified Hodgkinson. She said she thought her husband, James Hodgkinson, had gone to the Washington area to work on tax policy.

Those who knew him around Belleville have said nothing suggested he was capable of the attack on members of Congress, in spite of his often stated, very strong, and well-documented anti-Republican views. A bar manager at a restaurant in Alexandria told the newspaper that Hodgkinson visited repeatedly and seemed like "not a friendly person" but did not discuss politics or why he was in Alexandria. "I can't wrap my head around it", she said.

The couple had been married nearly thirty years, she said. "There's nothing I could do about it".

Before James Hodgkinson left his home in Belleville, Ill., in March, he sold almost everything he owned from his businesses.

James Hodgkinson, 66, disappeared from the downstate community earlier this year, authorities say. Though his office initially indicated he was in stable condition, it is now being reported that he is in "critical" condition and may require more surgery.

Those on the far Right claim harsh rhetoric by Democrats and liberals over Republican President Donald Trump is creating this culture of violence.

The FBI said it had recovered and was processing a cellphone, a computer and a camera.

Schaumleffel never actually knew Hodgkinson said now he'd never forget the day he was out there shooting. Zack Barth, an aide to Rep. Roger Williams (R-Texas), was shot in the calf.

In addition, the FBI Springfield and St. Louis Evidence Response Teams are searching the subject's home in Belleville, Illinois. A congressional staffer was shot in the leg but was released from a hospital.

Before Hodgkinson emerged from a black SUV that had been parked outside the family home for much of the afternoon, Wagner, the sheriff's deputy, said, "She wants this to end. she's scared to death". At the time of the shooting Scalise, the third highest-ranking member of the House of Representatives, was being protected by Capitol Police security detail.
