The man who shot senior Republican congressman Steve Scalise and others at a congressional baseball practice session this week had a list containing the names of three politicians, officials said.

"So, we've got to speak up for the whole country", James Hodgkinson told KTVI.

Richard Wagner, chief deputy of the St. Clair County sheriff's office, said afterward that Hodgkinson was told about the shooting by a journalist and has been with the Federal Bureau of Investigation since the shooting.

Hodgkinson's wife told media members this week that she was shocked by the actions of her estranged husband.

Suzanne Hodgkinson asked reporters to leave the area, saying that she and her family had been through enough. When that woman's boyfriend confronted Hodgkinson, he struck him in the face with a shotgun before firing off a round as the man fled, a police report said. Wednesday, they said the IL resident had been living out of his auto in the D.C. area since March.

The shooter, who is known as Tom (his middle name) to his friends and family, was raised in the same IL town where he and his wife resided.

Those on the far Right claim harsh rhetoric by Democrats and liberals over Republican President Donald Trump is creating this culture of violence.

At her weekly news conference, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said she was "personally heartbroken" over Scalise's injuries.

The FBI said it had processed a white conversion van owned by Hodgkinson, which was parked at the YMCA adjacent to where the shooting happened.

According to his Facebook page, Hodgkinson was a fervent supporter of Sanders, the feisty independent who nearly defeated Hillary Clinton a year ago in a tough fight for the Democratic White House nomination. "She had no idea he felt as strong as he did", Wagner said.

"[James] was home all day long and he just wanted a break", she said, adding that she did not know if he had taken any weapons with him as he left. He always drank alone, and always drank cans of Budweiser - sometimes just one, sometimes as many as six, said Kristina Scrimshaw, a bartender at the restaurant. She told reporters she feels "horrible". "I think it's awful", Reis said. He allegedly punched a woman who was a friend of the girl. "People say weird things all the time".
