The announcement of a "Top Gun" sequel came last month on the Australian morning news show "Sunrise", after months of rumor and speculation.
In a new interview with Access Hollywood, The Mummy star Tom Cruise finally reveals the title of the mildly-anticipated sequel to 1986's Top Gun. "I didn't want a number", he said.
The actor also confirmed that in terms of tone, style, music and so forth, Maverick will be consistent with the original Top Gun movie. Other plot details are vague, but Val Kilmer has said that he was asked to come back to reprise the role of Iceman opposite Cruise's Maverick.
"It's going to be a competition film like the first one, and it's going to be in the same vein and the same tone as the first", he says, with "the need for speed and big, fast machines". We're gonna have the same score from Harold Faltermeyer. Its gonna be a competition like the first one.
The original film, which starred Cruise as hot shot pilot Maverick, was directed by the late Tony Scott, and has become a classic of pop culture. He also told Access Hollywood that the second film will have a very similar tone to the first.
The original Top Gun, which celebrated its 30th anniversary a year ago, was directed by the late Tony Scott. Recent reports, meanwhile, have suggested that TRON: Legacy'sJoseph Kosinski is the frontrunner to direct. Kosinski and Cruise previously teamed up on the science fiction film Oblivion.
