Martin Truex Jr. pulls away to win after late restart at Kansas

Busch, who won the spring Cup race a year ago, cruised the final few laps to win once again at the track that once game him so much trouble. This is the first of Kansas Speedway's two Cup Series races in 2017.

They probably, like Truex, are psyched for not just what occurred Saturday, but for what's to come.

On the restart, Truex blew past Blaney and never gave the lead back.

Though he's never won at Charlotte in any of the top three series, he also led a total of 16 laps over the last two seasons at the Cup level.

"The only thing I'm not too sure about is how so many cars can not get through", said David Ragan, whose auto also failed inspection. "There were times there it looked like we weren't going to have a shot at it". His Wood Brothers Racing Ford was particularly strong on short runs, an advantage on a night that featured 15 cautions, which tied the track record. Appreciate all the fans. "The heartbreaks we've been through, I'm definitely proud tonight to cross that checkered flag first. They're all big. I've been fortunate so far". There was a sobering aspect, too. A part from the 22 Joey Logano vehicle broke and collected Danica Patrick and Aric Almirola into a hard wreck. They placed Almirola on a backboard and rolled him to a waiting ambulance on a gurney. He was later airlifted to the Kansas University Medical Center.

Logano, watching the replay for the first time on television, was visibly shaken after seeing the impact. "Just saying a lot of prayers for Aric right now".

"A lot of us took a hard hit", Logano said. "Something broke in our vehicle".

"I knew if I could get out front on those restarts, I'd be fine". "I noticed it as I was trying to go in".

"I'm not going to lie to you: As a racer, you don't forget", Truex said. "The last three races have been really, really bad, and it's just an extra kind of slap to the face that we've had really fast cars in all those races we had troubles in, and we shouldn't have finished 35th". "That's the last thing you want to see". It's unfortunate for everyone. "Let's hope that Aric is alright". Almirola was trailing the accident and appeared to lose control as he came upon the crash site, skidding into the cars of Patrick and Logano.

"We were having a really good race and having fun out there and had a lot of speed", Patrick said. "I kinda felt like Wonder Woman for a little while". All I know is that I all of a sudden crashed.

"The No. 78 got us on that restart somehow", Blaney said.

The only team headquartered west of the Mississippi, Barney Visser's two-car outfit has managed to challenge powerhouse teams such as Hendrick and Penske with regularity. "The 77 is going to do it for us". Busch moved to the front during a long green-flag run to sweep the intermediate stages with Bell and Rhodes finishing second and third.

However, Blaney lined up second (on the inside) to Erik Jones, who opted to stay out on older tires.

But Truex got a huge launch to the outside of the polesitter and quickly pulled ahead. "Blaney was blocking pretty good, but I just had enough momentum and timed it just right that I could get to his other side when he blocked low".

"So, it was nice to show our muscle this weekend and prove that, like I said, this is where the 21 team deserves to be". He is second in the point standings right now.
