Joshua, meanwhile, now boasts a flawless 19-0 record following his win over Klitschko, with all of the 27-year-old's victories coming inside the distance.

Joshua stopped Klitschko in the 11th round after both boxers suffered knock-downs during the Wembley thriller.

The Ukrainian former world champion rose unsteadily before being floored again.

Joshua's promoter Eddie Hearn revealed the heavyweight next plans to fight towards the year's end.

American Boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard was among those who immediately hailed the contest as "amazing".

"Such an unbelievable fight with 2 great fighters".

"I wasn't surprised that the fight ended in a knockout, I had predicted that it would surely happen but I didn't get the round correct. A lot of questions answered by @anthonyfjoshua #JoshuaKlitchsko", he tweeted. Toward the championship rounds, Joshua would soon regain his composure while Klitschko showed signs of fatigue paving the way for an exciting finish. If it is, he's had an incredible career and can go out with his head held high after a great performance against a much younger man.

I say gentlemen, because boxing came from England.

Joshua now boasts a ideal 19-0 record following his win, with all of his victories coming inside the distance.

"I fought the better Wladimir Klitschko, not the complacent one, the guy who realised his mistakes and wanted to put it right", Joshua said.

"As boxing states, you leave your ego at the door and respect your opponent, so a massive shout-out to Wladimir Klitschko for taking part", Joshua added.

Anthony Joshua, left, beat Wladimir Klitschko in 11 rounds to retain the IBF Heavyweight belt.

Klitschko suffered his first stoppage defeat since 2004 when he was overwhelmed by Joshua's precision and power in a ferocious 11th-round assault.

Joshua rocked Klitschko and dropped him in round five. Anthony was better today. "I'm really enjoying this right now".

The rivals became embroiled in a Twitter spat before the fight, with Joshua, 27, offering Fury two seats for the fight, for him and his "fat a**".

As the seconds were ordered out of the ring to mark the beginning of the penultimate round, Joshua took one deep breath and unleashed a furious flurry that forced the Ukrainian to the deck.

Indeed, in what was perhaps the most courageous couple of minutes in his two-decade professional career, Klitschko fought back dazzlingly, one big left hook setting up a counter-attack so ferocious that by the end of the round it was Joshua who was looking nearly out on his feet.

The Briton missed with a big overhand right at the start of the third round but then connected with a sledgehammer left hand. He took the best punches from Klitschko (64-5), and survived to knock out a future Hall of Famer.
