Man City boss Guardiola misses pressure of Germany and Spain

The injury-plagued City skipper rose highest to head in a David Siva corner for his first goal since August 2015.

Kompany marked his latest return to the City defense by heading a 55th-minute opener before Leroy Sane and Sergio Aguero also contributed goals.

In his second start in 10 days for the club, the towering Belgian headed home the first goal that would open the floodgates to City's 3-0 away romp at St. Mary's.

'For example, we were out of the Champions League in Monaco and we played three tough games against Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea.

He said: "I would have been done and dusted if I needed every single time to get back in and time to adapt".

Vincent Kompany says that his level of match fitness "does not matter" after scoring in the win against Southampton on Saturday in only his second game back after two months out.

"When something like this happens I feel like I'm giving something back to the team and the fans and that's what you see in those moments".

"The performance is so good considering where we are playing and that is why we are so, so happy".

"It's ups and downs in football, but ultimately what gets you up is you keep looking towards your objective".

Southampton were prevented from going in front after Fernandinho cleared Cedric's attempt away from goal, which was destined to find the target.

Despite spending heavily in recent seasons, City's title aspirations have been hampered by an inability to build a consistent, reliable central defensive partnership in Kompany's absence.

City, who won the competition in 2011, head into the game as favourites following a poor run of form for the Gunners which has seen many calling for an end to Arsene Wenger's tenure at the Emirates Stadium.

Everton are reported to be showing an interest in Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany, who faces an uncertain future.

"This result is so important for our qualification for the Champions League", said Guardiola, whose side host neighbours United in their next league game. "We were nervous at the beginning of the game". We were able finally to make 15, 20, 25 passes in a row.
