The surprise visit came shortly after the Patriots' arrival at the White House, where the team was scheduled to meet President Donald Trump in celebration of their 2017 Super Bowl win.

"Basic reason for me is I don't feel accepted in the White House", McCourty, a two-time Pro Bowler, told Time Magazine in an interview published in February. "He persevered to become the 45th president of the United States".

As we learned before the Super Bowl, Tom's mother, Galynn Brady, has been battling cancer over the previous year, so many are anxious that the "personal family matter" he skipped White House event for has to do with her.

Kraft was one of at least seven National Football League team owners who gave $1 million each to President Trump's inaugural committee, a new fundraising report shows.

Martellus Bennett, who joked that he might move to outer space if Mr Trump was elected, said: "It is what it is".

Trump addressed the team outside, giving New England fans what they always want to hear; stories about George Steinbrenner.

It seems that the team was slightly more enthusiastic about their White House trip after the 2014 season, because a total of 50 players attended the D.C. ceremony while Barack Obama was president.

Gronkowski joined the rest of his teammates on the South Lawn for the ceremony, during which Trump praised individual players such as wide receivers Danny Amendola and Julian Edelman for their contributions during the Super Bowl.

Besides Brady, six members of the team were not expected at Wednesday's event. Trump also has been close over the years with Patriots owner Bob Kraft and head coach Bill Belichick.

It started in front of the White House, where the bulk of the team, its coaches, and owner Robert Kraft took photos with their five Vince Lombardi trophies. "In that same year a very good friend of mine for over 25 years, a man who is mentally tough and hard-working as anybody I know launched a campaign for the presidency against 16 career politicians facing odds nearly as long as we faced in the fourth quarter. Maybe. I'll see you in a minute", Spicer replied.

. "It was much better".

"It is a distinct honor for us to celebrate what was unequivocally our sweetest championship with a very good friend and somebody whose mental toughness and strength I greatly admire", said Kraft. "He made that the greatest letter".
