One school district, the Currituck County Schools, already plans to be closed Thursday because of the severe weather. Isolated tornadoes also are possible, the weather service said in its 3 p.m. briefing Tuesday.

The National Weather Service says scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop later this morning across southeast Georgia, and by midday across southeast SC. Tornadoes (some of which could be long-lived) and damaging straight-line wind seem to be the greatest threats.

With reports of a large tornado touching down in west-central Georgia Wednesday morning, the National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for Gadsden and Liberty counties ahead of a strong line of eastward moving storms.

"Damaging thunderstorm wind gusts in excess of 60 miles per hour are the pri8mary threat across northeast SC and Southeast North Carolina, especially tonight into Thursday morning", according to the bulletin.

Earlier Wednesday, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport temporarily halted flights in the morning, but operations resumed by 1:30 p.m.

The Storm Prediction Center upgraded northeast Georgia and the Upstate Tuesday morning to a moderate category for severe storms Wednesday. "Additionally, locally heavy rainfall may occur, with minor flooding of low lying areas possible".

Showers and thunderstorms are likely Wednesday evening with a chance of showers and storms after midnight.

"As a result, those areas affected by the strongest thunderstorms could receive structural damage, downed trees and subsequent power outages", according to the National Weather Service bulletin. Up until this point, look for a mix of sun and clouds with warm highs in the mid-upper 70's.

Jefferson County residents can also register for the Everbridge system, which will send a text message, email or phone call if a listed location is under a severe warning.
