Declaring that "the best time is now", Brown said she is enjoying life and is not sitting around waiting to die. Young said he has met Brown and examined her birth certificate, which was issued by the British authorities who governed Jamaica at the time of her birth.

"I always thought my grandmother would live a long time because she was doing really well when she got to 100", he told the newspaper.

She also used to eat 500 grams of Gianduiotti every week (chocolates made with the hazelnuts) and glasses full of honey - and was also the oldest Italian person EVER.

She is now the world's oldest person, after Emma Morano of Italy, whose life spanned three centuries from 1899 to 2017, passed away Saturday.

In a 2010 interview with the Jamaican Gleaner, the then-110-year-old Brown revealed her secret to long life.

Brown was born in Jamaica on March 10, 1900, making her 117 years and 38 days old.

A 117-year-old Jamaican Baptist woman is now the world's oldest human, according to the Gerontology Research Group.

"This is what God has given me, so I have to take it - long life", Ms Brown told the AP.

She also avoids rum, but eats everything she wants except for chicken and pork. She later became a businesswoman in her own right, cultivating her own sugarcane. She also clearly remembers seeing her first plane and vehicle.

Brown told the Jamaica Observer Sunday that she feels "happy to be the oldest person". She is a great-great-grandmother and has descendants in Jamaica, the United States, Europe and Africa, according to IAmJamaican. Guinness World Records officially confirmed Morano as the last living person to have been born in the 1800s.

There are estimated to be 300 to 450 living supercentenarians in the world, though only 50 of those cases are known to the group and verified.

The next oldest person on the list is Nabi Tajima, who is 116 years and 256 days old.
