"In fact, if you have marijuana right now, even if you are acting completely legally according to your state, you may still be in serious jeopardy". Still, 44 states allow some kind of medical marijuana use, and eight allow recreational use, and Oliver found that heartening.

Using his wit and, of course, a cute image, Oliver said: "Marijuana is not a schedule 1 any more than a hedgehog is an apex predator".

In addition to detailing how the USA tax code screws marijuana businesses that operate legally within their states, Oliver showed how federal regulations put individuals who were complying with state laws at risk. Oliver took aim at the federal classification of marijuana as a Schedule I substance, which puts it on par with heroin and LSD. And that has led to federal-state clashes and chaos, mistakes on the state level, and federal barriers to researching marijuana's medical effectiveness. As Oliver points out, the so-called war on drugs has disproportionately affected African Americans. He also opined that "good people" don't smoke marijuana, though many veterans suffering from PTSD have said they find it helps control their symptoms. Congress now has a Cannabis Caucus, a bipartisan effort that aims to protect state marijuana laws, and there's at least one proposed law to remove marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act. Over the course of 16 minutes, Oliver gave a brief marijuana history lesson-featuring Richard Nixon in rare form-and plucked some present-day examples of people whom the country's contradictory laws affect. Throughout the segment, he kept calling out an imaginary person named Greg, hoping to freak out any stoned viewers named Greg who were watching the episode.
