Ottawa Senators left wing Ryan Dzingel (18) celebrates his goal with teammate Derick Brassard during second-period NHL hockey game action against the Montreal Canadiens in Ottawa, Ontario, Saturday, March 18, 2017.

The NHL has announced a press conference in Ottawa on Friday that will be attended by league commissioner Gary Bettman, the owners of the Senators and Canadiens, Ottawa mayor Jim Watson and others.

TD Place Stadium is located at Landsdowne Park in Ottawa and is typically home to the Ottawa Redblacks of the Canadian Football League and the Ottawa Fury FC of the United Soccer League.

It was always expected that the NHL's oldest franchise would play a key role in the NHL's 100th anniversary celebrations, and it was also known that Ottawa was aiming for an outdoor game as well.

With the win, the Canadiens (40-23-8) take a two-point lead over the Senators (39-23-8) for first in the Atlantic Division.

"One hundred years ago our Senators played their first NHL game to help give rise to the greatest professional hockey league in the world", Senators owner Eugene Melnyk said.

The NHL 100 Classic will be played the evening of Saturday, Dec. 16 at TD Place, capping off the league's centennial celebrations.

The rivals are both in playoff positions in this season's National Hockey League standings, the Canadiens atop the Atlantic Division on 86 points, one ahead of the Senators.
