It's the world's first adjustable roof spoiler, according to Porsche, and it generates up to 110 pounds of downforce on the rear axle. The auto will also hit other markets in early November, Porsche said, noting that there will be five different engine choices.

In addition, the Turismo Sport will feature Porsche Traction Management (PTM) - an active all-wheel drive system with electronically controlled multi-plate clutch - as standard, while S models will receive adaptive air suspension with three-chamber technology. The boot has a volume of 520 litres (Panamera 4 E-Hybrid Sport Turismo: 425 litres), 20 litres more than the saloon.

The Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo will be powered a twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 delivering 542hp, while the diesel sipping Panamera 4S Diesel Sport Turismo receives a turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine with 416hp, making it one of the fastest diesel cars on the planet. In lieu of a bench, the second row is made up of two individual seats and a third, occasional-use seat in the middle.

The Sport Turismo measures up at the same length, width and wheelbase as the standard vehicle, but with 5mm extra height. When traveling under 105 miles per hour, the spoiler retracts to an angle of minus seven degrees. The roof-mounted spoiler can be set in two stages and varies at the speed and mode selected. Porsche calls this unique looking machine the new Panamera Sport Turismo.

"The Panamera Sport Turismo is a step forwards into a new market segment, but it retains all of the values and attributes characteristic of Porsche", says Michael Mauer, head of Porsche's design operations.

Having confounded sceptics with the launch of the Cayenne SUV in 2002, the German brand renowned for its sports cars is now offering an estate.

A more powerful 434bhp petrol variant badged the 4S costs £93,979, while a diesel 4S produces 416bhp and is priced from £97,067. This includes the Panamera 4 Sport Turismo (330 hp), Panamera 4 E-Hybrid Sport Turismo (462 hp) Panamera 4S Sport Turismo (440 hp) Panamera 4S Diesel Sport Turismo (422 hp) and Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo (550 hp).

Rounding out the range is the E-Hybrid version, which is a $255,800 plug-in hybrid which combines the twin-turbo V6 from the Panamera 4 with an electric motor for total outputs of 340kW and 700Nm.
