They traded the 28-year-old to the New York Rangers today for a second-round pick and a third-round pick in this year's draft, according to TSN's Bob McKenzie.

In all, the Red Wings now have 10 picks in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.

Heading into the National Hockey League trade deadline on Wednesday, the last-place team in the Atlantic Division is in a different position: The Red Wings are selling for a change.

The return is a pretty solid one for general manager Ken Holland and the Red Wings, who will likely see their playoff streak end at 25 seasons. "The more picks you have, the better your odds are".

The Red Wings now have 10 draft picks in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, including three picks in the third and two picks in the sixth round. He missed a few games then but has been playing through the injury.

Smith was fifth in ice time in Detroit at 18:44 minutes per game and has two goals and three assists in 33 games this season.

The Rangers reportedly had high hopes of landing coveted Kevin Shattenkirk, but the St. Louis Blues sent the power play stud defenseman to the Washington Capitals late Monday night.

Dan Girardi will be shut down for about two weeks, Alain Vigneault said Tuesday morning, because the wound on his right ankle from blocking a shot on February 7, which kept him out the next two games, hasn't properly healed.
