NYPD Investigating Deadly Fall From Oculus Escalator

A New Jersey woman died after falling from an escalator inside the World Trade Center Oculus early Saturday morning as she was apparently trying to grab something, an NYPD spokeswoman told Patch.

The incident happened around 5:30 a.m. Saturday. The victim's twin sister was also treated for trauma.

She was transported to Bellevue Hospital, according to The Daily Mail, but was ultimately pronounced dead.

It was a tragic accident that witnesses will never forget at the World Trade Center Oculus. She was identified by the News as a Kearny, New Jersey woman.

The Oculus houses a high-end shopping mall as well as connections to PATH trains to New Jersey and the subway. It's unbelievable, ' one Port Authority worker could be overheard saying at the scene. 'A f*****g hat'.

According to the New York Daily News, Jennifer Santos' death inside of the World Trade Center Oculus is the first of its kind since the structure, which was built near the former location of the famed Twin Towers, opened up to the public a decade ahead of schedule in March of a year ago.

The Oculus, designed by renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, was built to replace the NJ Path terminal destroyed in the World Trade Center attacks.
