Sen. Ted Cruz called Democrats "the party of the Ku Klux Klan", for their opposition to senators in the minority such as Jeff Sessions, Donald Trump's nominee for attorney general.

Cruz also blasted the Democratic Party for being the party more tied to historical racism in the US, including Jim Crow laws and the founding of the Ku Klux Klan. Elizabeth Warren (MA) for her "slanderous" attacks on their Senate colleague Jeff Sessions. In the letter, King said that Sessions had promoted racist policies.

Speaking on Fox News on Wednesday, the Republican senator from Texas accused Democrats of being "angry and out of their minds" for opposing Sessions, who was confirmed later Wednesday evening.

"And yet now the Democrats just accuse anyone they disagree with of being a racist". "It's an ugly, ugly part of the modern Democratic Party", he said on "America's Newsroom".

The Senate's Rule XIX prohibits debating senators from ascribing "to another senator or to other senators any conduct or motive unworthy or unbecoming a senator". Though Congress passed legislation created to curb Klan terrorism, the organization saw its primary goal-the reestablishment of white supremacy-fulfilled through Democratic victories in state legislatures across the South in the 1870s.

"When the left doesn't have any other arguments, they go and accuse everyone of being a racist", Cruz said.

Senate Democrats staged an all night protest Tuesday night against Sessions' nomination.

He then went on to slam the Democrats in general, pointing to their history with the Jim Crow South.

A vote by the full Senate on Sessions' confirmation is expected later today.
