Melvin Upton caps Jays' comeback with eighth-inning dash around bases

Toronto Blue Jays' Josh Donaldson reacts after fouling a pitch off his foot in the first inning of a baseball game against the Minnesota Twins in Toronto, Sunday, Aug. 28, 2016.

The Twins led 5-0 and 7-3 on Saturday before losing it in the eighth on an RBI triple by Melvin Upton Jr., who then continued home on an error by right fielder Max Kepler as he pursued the ball.

After the game Donaldson posted a picture on Twitter of him holding up two clear garbage bags filled with ball caps that the grounds crew and Blue Jays mascot Ace had collected from the field.

From there, he was all smiles.

Donaldson hit a solo home run to left in the third inning to give Toronto a 2-1 lead, a two-run homer to center in the seventh to put the Blue Jays ahead 6-5 and another solo shot to center in the eighth.

Donaldson's three home runs represent a single-game high for the second-year Blue Jay; it is the tenth multi-home run game of his career and fourth of this season.

"It's one of those things, as a baseball player, you want to happen one day", Donaldson said. "I was happy to do it".

After Sunday's performance, Donaldson is hitting.294/.407/.578 with 33 home runs and 91 RBI. He didn't disappoint Toronto fans, driving in Upton and Devon Travis to make it 7-5. Donaldson came out for a curtain call as the crowd of 47,444 roared their approval.

"I think it's unique to this area (the hat-trick) right, so it's really cool", said Jays starter R.A. Dickey "You don't see something like that very often, I think the response was warranted". "I come in here, go about my business, do my work, have fun, try to be loose with everybody. that's part of who I am". (Edwin Encarnacion) was on deck after I hit the third one and he had a huge smile on his face. We talked about that a little bit (Friday).

In fact, Donaldson on Sunday tallied the first three-homer game of his career.

"It doesn't get any better than that", manager John Gibbons said. Sitting just a game ahead of the Boston Red Sox in the division, they only lead the Detroit Tigers (first team now out of the wild-card picture) by four games.

The Twins have lost six straight in Toronto.

"We scored over 20 runs in three games and couldn't find a way to win one", Molitor said. "It shows you how they're rolling offensively". Troy Tulowitzki also went deep and Scott Feldman picked up the win.

Jason Grilli pitched around a walk in the top of the eighth.

Toronto chased Santana while scoring three times in the seventh. The ball dropped in for a double, and Bautista later scored on a sacrifice fly. Molitor said Santana would be placed on the disabled list with a sprained left left shoulder.

DIAMONDBACKS 11, REDS 2: Yasmany Tomas homered, Welington Castillo drove in four runs and Archie Bradley earned his first win in more than a month and Arizona romped at home over Cincinnati.

PADRES 3, MARLINS 1: Luis Perdomo benefited from a team record six double plays while pitching a six-hitter for his first complete game, and San Diego won at Miami.

Twins: Triple-A OF Logan Schafer will join the team in Cleveland Monday to replace Santana.

The improbable victory sets up the possibility of a spirit lifting sweep after the Blue Jays were caught sleeping versus the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
