$540 million Mega Millions ticket sold in Indiana

One winning ticket has been sold in IN in the Mega Millions lottery, hitting a jackpot worth US$540 million (NZ$740 million), the seventh largest in United States lottery history.

The lucky numbers were 20, 19, 55, 73 and 8, with a megaball of 5.

Someone is $1 million richer after the Cumberland Farms store in Sharon sold a winning Mega Millions ticket.

The largest Mega Millions jackpot, worth $656 million, was sold the prior year.

"Congrats to the one #MegaMillions jackpot victor in Indiana", California Lottery officials tweeted.

Mega Millions is played in 36 states along with the District of Columbia and the U-S Virgin Islands. The overall chance of winning a prize is 1 in 14.71. That's the news coming from the Mega Millions website, in a new press release titled "Mega Millions jackpot won again on the 8th!" The only other jackpot won this year was on January 8 in NY. Just behind that is the $648 million jackpot split by two winners on December 17, 2013.

Mega Millions drawings are held Tuesday and Friday nights at 11. The mega ball was 5. Under Indiana law, lottery winners' names are public record once they claim the prize, he said.
