In his testimony, Dr. Frieden said that, since the virus was spotted in the Western Hemisphere late previous year, Zika has spread to 32 countries and territories, including at least 147 confirmed cases in the United States. The county is recommending that any pregnant woman who has traveled to one of the 14 countries where the Zika outbreak is ongoing talk to her doctor about being tested.

The detection of autochthonous cases of Zika virus infection indicates that the virus is spreading geographically to previously unaffected areas (Trinidad and Tobago).

As the mosquito-borne Zika virus spreads through South America, a Chicago hospital confirmed the first local case of the virus Tuesday: A 30-year-old woman tested positive for the disease after returning from a trip to Colombia in January. New CDC estimates placed the likelihood of contracting the virus there as high as 1 in 5, the Washington Post reported.

The Ministry of Health on Thursday said it appeared a man who contracted the virus had passed it on to his female partner who had never travelled to a Zika-affected country. As per the Chinese health ministry website, scientists have successfully decoded genes that make up for the Zika virus.

"Ultimately, the goal of this open source platform is to identify the risk of Zika transmission for different regions and help UNICEF, governments and NGO's decide how and where to focus their time and resources", Google's announcement said, referring to non-governmental organizations.

Since the Zika outbreak began in Brazil last spring, thousands of babies have been born with microcephaly - a neurological condition that causes a small head size and a range of developmental side effects. But Napa and Yolo county health officials chose to release the information about their cases.

To help raise awareness, YouTube is working with creators on new educational videos, including a video of Elmo teaching kids how to avoid mosquito bites in Spanish.

Zika is only now considered a health concern, Westrich says, because of its implications for pregnant women.

Symptoms of Zika include fever, joint pain, rash, conjunctivitis (pink eye), headache, muscle pain or eye pain. The other requests didn't document illness but symptom information might have been incomplete.

Public Health officials expect to see more cases as testing for Zika virus continues. There have been a few travelers from OH who have gotten the virus in other countries but there have been no reports of disease transmission in the state.
